Hoyo de Monterrey
Piramides Edicion Limitada
Origin: Cuba
Size: 6.00 X 52
Wrapper: Natural
From
Pablamos Cigars:
The name of these cigars take their origins from the Hoyo
de Monterrey plantation in the Vuelta Abajo region of
Cuba. The Monterrey plantation was owned by a Spanish
settler, José Gener, who had left Catalunya in
1831 at 13 years of age to join his uncle producing "los
majagua cigarillos" for the local Cuban market. In
1851 José convinced his uncle to open a cigar factory
in La Habana where they began production of "La Escepcion"
brand for the vast American market. Building on the success
of this brand José Gener acquired the Hoyo de Monterrey
plantation in 1860 and 5 years later began production
of the cigars that took their name from this "vega"
(Las Vegas translates as the fertile plains). The soft
taste of Hoyo de Monterrey cigars is a favourite amongst
those who prefer a Habano of less force - delicate, aromatic
and complex - and the Double Coronas and the Epicure no
2's are especially well-known amongst lovers of Habanos
cigars.

Notes:
What an amazing cigar! All the checking I’ve done
says the size is 6.00 X 52…but I swear this thing
seemed at least twice as big! Of course holding this thing
in my hand I could not help but start to compare it to
a Montecristo #2. And while that would not be fair I did
it anyway…the Monte is one of my all time favorites.
But I must say this HDM was a much prettier cigar. The
wrapper by all accounts is listed as “natural”
but this one was as dark and oily as any maduro wrapper
I’ve ever seen. (The picture does not do it justice)
The overall construction was smooth and solid.
And now the best part….from start to finish this
thing was as I said earlier…amazing! It started
out right in the middle of medium…then built in
strength to the medium strong point. It was never hot
nor harsh. I believe a Monte #2 is much stronger. But
this cigar was much more complex than any Montecristo
I’ve ever smoked. Each draw made me stop and think.
This thing must have changed flavors three or four times.
Everything from chocolate to leather but always pure Cuban
satisfaction. It burned slow and even. A great draw that
gave up tons of rich blue smoke. As you might expect the
ash was solid, think and white. I have to say that this
is one of the best cigars I have smoked in a long, long
time.
They are not cheap, but this is one cigar that I am going
to say is well worth the money.
